[19.3] I need to use an external database with Director. What's the deal?

Several products exist to allow Director to create and access many standard database file types. AFAIK, the main ones are as follows:

FileFlex is a XCMD/XFCN for HyperCard that also works smoothly with Director. A Windows version is planned for summer 1995. It is fully XBase compatible, allowing both Mac & Windows FoxPro files to be read as well as dBase III+ and MS Access. Equally, you can create and maintain FileFlex databases entirely within Director, without recourse to other database apps. Runtime licenses are US$100 per title.

Oracle produce (er, probably; I have no confirmation of this, only reports that they were due to release it in Nov 1994) "Oracle Access", a revamp of their previous HyperSQL package, a set of XCMDs allowing HyperCard (and therefore Mac Director) to access current Oracle databases.

ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) is intended to provide a common API across most popular databases once appropriate ODBC drivers/extensions are installed in the OS. Both Apple and Microsoft support ODBC, though you'll have to forage for the appropriate driver software and licensing to distribute it with your products.

For Windows, Solis market an ODBC XObject which uses the installed drivers (which should be available from the company who produce your database app, or from Microsoft) to allow Director to access files from any ODBC compliant database. Although this requires a certain amount of installation, this is apparently not difficult and accessing & querying the databases using SQL is straightforward.

I am not aware of any Mac ODBC XObjects, but there's bound to be some along before too long...
