Salary Advancement for Academic Work

When making an application for salary advancement for academic work, be sure that the course prefix, number and course title on your application matches your official transcript. Typical course prefix numbers and titles that have been identified as problematic for Human Resources are those courses that may change or be repeated, such as Special Projects, Research and Development (eg. ASU's RDG 799).

If this occurs, you must resubmit your salary advancement application to your advancement FPG representative with course prefix, number and course title matching your transcript, for approval by FPG. If you have a change in your program of study, you must file a change of program of study form. It is your responsibility to check your transcript against your approved program of study or approved salary advancement application for correct course prefix, number and course title.

Faculty may submit applications for a wide variety of academic experiences. They are encouraged to continue their education through official acceptance and pursuit of advanced studies at accredited educational institutions (ones listed in the Higher Education Directory published by Higher Education Publications, Inc). Credits may be earned on campus or via distance learning modalities.

If you are interested in International Academic Credits you must have the course work evaluated by an acrediting agency (see new policy adopted February 14, 2002).

Please refer to the current deadlines for application. The following questions should help guide you to the appropriate area:

  • Are you taking individual graduate courses in education or your teaching field? Are you taking individual upper division (300-400) level courses in education or your teaching field?
    Go to faculty application process

  • Are you taking a course in a different subject area from your teaching field?
    (process in development)

  • Are you taking individual 100-200 level courses?
    Go to faculty application process

  • Are you taking three or more courses to be completed as part of a specific certificate or degree program?
A program of study look up in glossary is recommended

  • Are you taking undergraduate courses outside of your discipline?
Are you occupational faculty undertaking an Associate or Bachelor's degree?

A program of study look up in glossary is required

Not all graduate degrees increase the professional competency of the faculty member. Your rationale should indicate how the degree will enahnces your professional growth. "Exceptions may be made for degrees leading to a probable future assignment." (RFP A.3.2.1) When requesting approval for coursework/degree attainment identified as an exception the following additional materials are suggested for submission with application: letters of support from Dean, Division Chair, and documentation which supports/illustrates how this enhances your Professional Growth.

While knowledge may be updated and refreshed by repeating a course, the repeated course is not eligible for advancement. Courses having the same university number and/or title require the applicant to demonstrate that the two courses are significantly different by providing course descriptions and outlines as needed for clarification.

Faculty must pay their own tuition and mark the statement on the application verifying they have not received funding from MCCCD for their educational expenses.
