What is "Pre-Approval"?

Pre-approval refers to a request submitted to the FPG Committee before the applicant begins the activity. As a practice, it encourages careful planning and reduces the possibility of faculty members committing time and money to an activity that does not meet District standards for professional growth. Pre-approval allows the committee time to notify applicants of modifications needed before the activity begins.

What kinds of activities require pre-approval?

All requests for funding including registration fees, travel reimbursements, summer projects, and sabbatical leaves must be pre-approved.

Pre-approval is recommended for horizontal advancement including travel, work experience, and other professional activities. Professional unpaid leaves must be pre-approved. Please discuss ideas for these activities with the college Advancements Representatives before preparing your application.

What sorts of dates and dealines are important for obtaining pre-approval?

During the academic year, applications requiring pre-approval should be sent to the Faculty Professional Growth Representative at least four weeks before the event begins. Please submit applications for travel, work experience, and other professional activities at least six weeks prior to planned activity to insure sufficient committee working time for your approval.

Applications for summer activities must be signed and delivered to the District two weeks prior to the last scheduled committee meeting (usually the first Tuesday in May).

In an emergency situation, the FPG committee may consider applications for pre-approval submitted without sufficient lead time. No application requiring pre-approval will be placed on the agenda unless it is delivered to the Faculty Professional Growth Representative or the college Dean of Instruction before the activity begins.

An application for pre-approval which was not submitted with sufficient lead time will only be reviewed by the committee one time. The committee will not request nor accept additional documentation to permit its approval at a second review.

Sabbatical proposals and requests for professional unpaid leaves have specified due dates. This allows sufficient time for committee and administrative review and approval.

Is pre-approval required for academic coursework?

While pre-approval is not required for course work, faculty are encouraged to request pre-approval for programs of study, courses outside their discipline and lower division courses.
