The Language of Internet Addresses

Alan Levine, DIST

You may know that the right most part of an Internet address indicates its broadest category (i.e..edu is for educational insitutions, .com is for commercial companies, .org is for non-profit organizations). For example, you decipher MCLIs web server address www.mcli.dist. maricopa.edu

So an Internet name reads right to left, from general to most specific. For other non-US sites, the right-most part of an address is a two letter code designated for that country:

www.dot.gov.au is a World Wide Web site (www) for the Department of Transportation (dot) in the government (gov) of Australia (au)

demon.co.uk is the electronic mailing address for someone who gets Internet service from Demon Internet (demon), a company (co) in the United Kingdom (uk)

Here is a quiz for you! Match the Internet code to the country it represents:

        AZ Chad

CH Sri Lanka

GT Austria

KH Azerbaidjan

LK Guatemala

PW Ivory Coast

ZA Cambodia

AT Swaziland

CI Switzerland

CX Palau

TD South Africa

SZ Christmas Island
