2008-2009 MIL Fellows: About Andrew Baldwin the maricopa institute for learning
Andrew (Andy) Baldwin was born and raised in North Carolina, earning his BS in Biology with honors at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte by completing a project involving carnivorous plants. He then moved to Appalachian State University (the real ASU) in NC's Blue Ridge Mountains to earn a MS in Biology. There, Andy was exposed to the west by studying the scorpions of West Texas. In 1997, Andy began a NSF-funded project studying evolutionary patterns in salamanders at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). At UTA, he met his wife, Jana, also a biologist. In 2002, Andy earned his Ph.D. in Quantitative Biology, earned awards for both teaching and research, spent a year at Texas Tech University (TTU) as a postdoc, and was hired at Mesa Community College to lead the non-majors introductory biology course. During this path, Andy learned to enjoy writing, serving as editor for a herpetological (reptiles and amphibians) journal and as a major contributor to two college biology texts.
In Arizona, Andy and Jana enjoy educating the public about desert wildlife on a volunteer basis, exploring the desert, collect Aloe and Agave species, stewarding homeless tortoises, restoring an antique Chevy truck, and remodeling their house.
