Photograph of Ernie ChavezErnie Chavez was born and raised in the Phoenix area and earned a Bachelors degree from Arizona State University and a Masters Degree from Northern Arizona University. Ernie is a member of the American Mathematical Association of The Two-Year College as well as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and has presented both regionally and nationally. He has taught for the Maricopa Community College District for eight years and is completing his sixth year at Chandler Gilbert Community College where he is a residential faculty in the Mathematics Division. Ernie's interest in applying for and MIL Fellowship grew form his strong belief that integrating conceptual learning and writing into his course materials allows students to process, apply and retain difficult mathematical concepts. He credits his late friend and mentor John Mildrew for helping him develop his passion for teaching and helping students succeed. Ernie also serves as co-advisor of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the Two Year College.

Ernie enjoys traveling, is an avid lover of the outdoors and spends his free time hiking, backpacking or riding his mountain bike. During the summer months he spends as much time as possible pursing his outdoor hobbies in the cool pines of Flagstaff Arizona. He lists the two trips he has taken to Alaska as two of his all-time favorite hiking/backpacking trips and hopes to return again in the near future.
