11. The Evolution of Conjecturing in a Differential Equations Course (2003-2004 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Mark Burtch (Chandler-Gilbert Community College)
The purpose of this paper is to explore how conjecturing may evolve as a regular activity of students in an inquiry oriented class by documenting its evolution in one such differential equations course. (package created May 4, 2004)
12. Learning Academic Self-Regulation Strategies in an Online Nutrition Course (2003-2004 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Maureen Zimmerman (Mesa Community College)
The primary purpose of this project is to identify and teach students the academic self-regulatory behaviors necessary to foster success in a domain-specific, web-based course. (package created May 4, 2004)
13. From Reflective Volunteerism to Civic Activism: Advancing Service Learning Pedagogy through Civic Engagement (2003-2004 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Dean Stover (GateWay Community College)
With the aim of increasing my GateWay Community College students' civic literacy and knowledge about political processes, I designed a series of civic engagement assignments and measured the impact on my English/Humanities students' attitudes. (package created May 4, 2004)
14. In the End is the Beginning: Modified Jigsaw Methodologies for Effective Learning in Hybrid Teaching Environments Allow Learners to Understand their own Outcomes (2003-2004 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by William Farrar (Estrella Mountain Community College)
In our society, active participation in a group can often be necessary for individual success. In particular, students' ability to successfully navigate their academic career is often enhanced when students have a sense of solidarity and responsibility to a group of peers. In distance-learning environments, students do not always meet face to face with their peers and are at risk for losing the advantages of group support. My project attempts to address this problem by exploring techniques for facilitating peer interactions in a hybrid-learning environment. (package created May 4, 2004)
15. Explorations into Writing Anxiety: Helping Students Overcome their Fears and Focus on Learning (2003-2004 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Diane Clark (Chandler-Gilbert Community College)
Many students exhibit unusually strong apprehension about writing, which often interferes with their ability to learn how to write effectively. This study explored the efficacy of an English 101 course designed specifically to help students overcome their writing anxiety while learning how to write more effectively. (package created May 4, 2004)
16. Influencing Student Learning Through the use of Interactive Activities (2003-2004 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Ly Tran-Nguyen (Mesa Community College)
Neuroscience research suggests that the brain is an incredibly 'plastic' organ that is capable of lifelong changes, a concept referred to as neural plasticity. Experience has been shown to influence neural plasticity and thus, may have implications for teaching and learning. The experimental design was used to examine various classroom experiences on student learning of brain anatomy and function. (package created May 4, 2004)
17. What Effect Do Innovative Writing Projects Have on Students' Views About Mathematics? (2001-2002 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Scott Adamson (Chandler-Gilbert Community College)
I will develop a mode of assessment that places students into a problem solving context, requires them to work as a team, communicate mathematically, and connect multiple representations of the mathematics. Students will receive a letter addressed to them from a famous character from television or a movie. Playing the role of mathematical consultant, students will respond to the mathematical situation by writing a letter in return. This letter must clearly explain the conclusions reached by the group, include mathematical justifications, and require students to apply their mathematical understanding to a unique problem situation. (package created Sep 11, 2003)
18. The Investigation of Teaching Information Literacy and Digital Literacy in the Digital Age (2001-2002 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Debbie Anderson (Estrella Mountain Community College)
The project will seek to research, investigate, and experiment with innovative approaches that will infuse information and digital literacy into the classroom experience in collaboration with subject specialists. In particular, it will research the new teaching methods and strategies to teach information and digital literacy using such tools as web-based learning, online instruction, and multimedia delivery. My second goal is to incorporate these strategies into an online learning module in a specific discipline to test the theories.
(package created Sep 11, 2003)
19. Determining Effective Distance Learning Designs through Usability Testing (2002-2003 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Susan K. Miller (Mesa Community College)
My project examines the effective design and delivery of web-based writing courses. This study will add to discussions of distance learning course usability in the disciplines of rhetoric and composition, instructional technology, human computer interactions, and graphical user interface. (package created Sep 8, 2003)
20. Images Across the Curriculum (2002-2003 MIL Fellowship)
package shared by Pushpa Ramakrishna (Chandler-Gilbert Community College)
The goal of "images across the curriculum" is to exploit the incredible potential of images in teaching students about fundamental concepts through scientific inquiry and to integrate learning across traditionally separated disciplines.
