(Abstract)
The Higher Learning Commission (HCL) requires accountability for documentation regarding course assessment and student learning outcomes. After a recent site visit to my campus, it was noted that many faculty were not documenting assessment outcomes in the classroom. I decided that I wanted to expand my knowledge of course assessment in order to assist faculty with the process of documentation.
In order to understand the process of course assessment more completely, I decided to do two different types of assessment, one with the psychology faculty and the other with my introductory students. With faculty, I wanted to find out the priority of psychological concepts and the amount of time being spent teaching those concepts. With students, I wanted to experiment with various types of assessment tools to see what specific tools students thought produced retention of the course concepts for them.
With this information, I felt I could begin to assist faculty across the campus to understand the importance of what and how to document course assessment and perhaps encourage the use of assessment methods that might assist student interest and retention.
