summary |
Community colleges play a particularly valuable role in providing both immigrant students and international visa students the opportunity to participate in higher education at affordable rates, and thereby, the means by which to achieve academic success in the university system and economic success in the market. To do so, there is a need for these students to learn English to communicate in the educational and workplace environments. |

(Abstract)
Despite recent changes in state, national, and international policies, community colleges are recruiting and enrolling international visa students, immigrant students, and 1.5 generation students as English language learners. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine how English language learners create meaning from their experience of learning at the community college. The researcher explored individual and collective experiences of English language learners through interviews and focus groups using traditional discourse analysis and contemporary theory of metaphor as a framework for data interpretation. In the second part of the project, current brain research and experiential learning theory informed a pedagogical approach for teaching and learning in communication classes for English language learners.
The findings from the data analysis suggested a common obstacle for many students was a fear of speaking English. This raised a poignant question regarding the source of the fear. Answering this question became central to the learning experiences designed to give voice to students while providing an experience of deep learning and knowledge transformation. A serendipitous outcome of this research was the move from theory to praxis by embracing experiential learning as an effective pedagogical approach to creating safe and challenging academic environments for English language learners.
